Architecture Week – DAY 1 – John Hejduk

Yay!! April 10-16 is Architecture week!

Granted this is a completely fictious week, invented by trade industry professionals for blatant self-promotion… But, then again, so is this blog, so let’s move on.

With that in mind, Coffee with an Architect is planning a week of… Architecture! I know, I don’t usually talk about Architecture. But, this week is Architecture week. So, I’m taking that risk, and so are you.

Each day this week I’ll post some images of Architecture that has resonated with me. To be honest, I’m not even sure if I like these, but, I come back to them again and again. This is Architecture that has confused and overwhelmed me. I think that may be good test of the value of Architecture. Does it provide material for a lifetime of interest? Or, is just it a fleeting but attractive image. If you can understand the work in a single viewing, was it really that important? But, if it makes you uneasy, yet intrigued…. There might be something there. You should probably go back and find out more… And I do, again, and again.

So, this week I’ll feature Architecture that I can’t stop coming back to. This is work I find endlessly interesting.

DAY 1

John Hejduk – 1929-2000

John Hejduks work completely baffles me. I’m not even sure I would call it Architecture. He borders on art and poetry as much as built form, and he has very few completed projects. Hejduk’s designs are as much about storytelling, and myth as they are about form and space. He creates structures that are characters who inhabit the city, usually for a short time. They are circus performers, traveling from town to town. For me, thinking of structures as individuals with their own history and personality was eye opening, and confounding. And, I can’t look away.
