Architecture can be cryptic. There are some things that we architects write on our drawings which do not necessarily mean what you think they mean.
For example:
Color and finish to be approved by Architect
I only write this when I haven’t had time to pick something out. The deadline is in a few days, so I just tack on that disclaimer and hope for the best. It buys me some time. And, I’m sure the contractor will pick out something really nice anyway. I’m sure they make “pleated” wall sconces don’t they? Although it will probably only be available in antique bronze, which is the color of Satan’s thong, but, I’m sure it will fit in with the pirate prostitute theme we’ve got going on. It will be fine. I should write “I’ll know it when I see it” instead, and just make them keep submitting products until something seems workable. I could sit in a Barcelona chair and wrinkle my nose up and wave their suggestions away with a dismissive eye-roll. Contractors will love me. Maybe next time they’ll just pick the stainless steel one and stop wasting my time.
.
Unless Noted Otherwise
Yes. I am expecting to change my mind.
.
Remove existing and replace with new
Isn’t this the first step for all architecture? Isn’t that why I was hired us in the first place? To remove that stand of trees and replace them with a new concrete representation of my hopes and dreams, or a pavilion of perfection, or a Quicky Lube, or something? Remove then replace. Repeat. Then invoice.
.
To be provided by others
No, I did not pick the Victorian reproduction armoire in the master bedroom. That was “by others”.
.
Value Engineering
Because, I was over budget, apparently.
.
Verify in Field
I give up. You figure it out.
.
Not Shown for Clarity
Only an Architect could write that.
.
Add Alternate
I was not able to fit everything that you asked for into your budget. So, I am calling these “alternates.” So if the prices don’t come in low enough to afford these, it’s the contractors fault. Problem solved.
.
Deduct Alternate
There is no such thing as a deduct alternate.
.
Revise and Resubmit
Um, No.
.
Permit Set
I’m not finished yet, but this should get the process started.
.
Not for Construction
Something that is not adequately detailed or thoroughly documented enough to become a viable part of the built environment. ie: Architecture.
.
So, now you know.
